About the project

Heraldry represents a deeply personal endeavor. This project stands as a heartfelt tribute to the rich tapestry of visual identities throughout history, as well as an homage to my family's heritage. It played a pivotal role in shaping my journey as a graphic designer. Heraldry serves as the foundation for modern visual identities. Its origins trace back to ancient Greece, where warriors adorned their shields with depictions of animals. The concept behind this practice was that if a soldier perished in battle, their shield would be returned to their family as a symbol of their sacrifice. Over time, this concept evolved into a comprehensive heraldic system that gained widespread use during the feudal era of the Middle Ages. In the present day, heraldry finds its primary application in educational institutions and royal families across the globe.

Heraldry and how it evolved is the basis and background for visual identities. Although google will telling you visual identities started with branding cattle, hence the name branding, heraldry is the original system of creating a visual representation of an individuals perceived and desired reputation. Branding is how an individual or a company are perceived and the visual identity is the visual representation of that perception.
